Biography

Eugene Evans Hornby, 88, Brainerd, peacefully departed with living wife & family at his side Monday, July 19, 2010 at St. Cloud Hospital. Eugene was born April 24, 1922 to Clarence and Mary (Anderson) Hornby in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. He married Rita Jabas on June 3, 1948.

Eugene was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd. He served in the Army Air Corp. He was a car man for the Northern Pacific Rail Road and he retired from Potlatch as a stockman. He was a lifetime member of the Legion #255 and the VFW #1647. Eugene loved horses, , hunting, fishing, bird & squirrel feeding. He was a snowbird and great adventurist. Family was very important to Eugene. He was an outstanding carpenter, loved dancing, had an amazing sense of humor and last but not least was bullheaded.

He is survived by his wife Rita, 3 sons: Scott Hornby of Brainerd; Larry (Becky) Hornby of Helena, Montana, Jon (Brenda) Hornby of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 2 daughters: Teresa (John) Buschmann of Calhan, Colorado, Roberta (Gene) Ramsdell, Pine Center, Minnesota; 2 brothers; James (Elfi) Hornby of Federal Way, Washington, Francis (Bernie) Hornby of Little Falls; 1 sister: Bernice (Earl) Lind of Brainerd; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Linda; brother Ralph; sisters Mildred, Lucille & Evelyn and step-mother Sophie.

Services will be held Friday, July 23, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Tony Wroblewski officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, July 22, 2010 from 5-7 PM at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd. There will be a prayer service at 6:30PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial are preferred to St. Francis of the Lakes School.

Arrangements are with the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd.
